Mitchell Griffin eagles final hole; wins 2021 Firecracker Open by 2 strokes

Mitchell Griffin stepped on the tee of the 54th hole of the 2021 Firecracker Open in a 5 way tie, sitting at 10-under par. A birdie would have been good enough, as none of the other four players birdied their final hole, however Griffin made absolutely certain to seal his victory with an eagle 2 on the short par 4 18th. Griffin finished the 2021 Firecracker Open at 12-under par.

Alex Levy, Austen Fulmer, Dallas Hankamer and Alex Ellis ended in a tie for 2nd place with a final score of 10-under. Logan Boatner finished solo 6th place at 9-under par, followed by third round leader Jonathan Alden at 8-under.

2021 Champion in the First Flight is Jason Long, who finished 6-over par (219), getting better each day with rounds of 74-73-72. Todd Lacoste finished solo 2nd place with a 12-over par total (225) and Dennis Sokol finished 3rd at 17-over (230).

Matt Brower wins the Second Flight with a total score of 30-over (243), followed by Tanner Hunt and Patrick Dickson, each finishing at 31-over (244).

Firecracker Round 1: Fulmer (-7) leads by 2 strokes over 2019 Champion Cersosimo (-5)

Austen Fulmer had 8 birdies and only 1 bogey on his way to shooting -7 (64), taking the first round lead by 2 strokes over Jack Cersosimo (2019 Champion), after the first round of the 2021 Firecracker Open. Cersosimo went bogey-free with 3 birdies and 1 eagle to shoot -5 (66).

A four-way tie for 3rd place after the first round is full of familiar names – Jay Reynolds, Alex Ellis, Alex Levy and Austin Cotton.

In the flighted division, the top 10 is full of “Rats” (if you know, you know) – Jason “J Lo” Long and Robert M. Evans are at the top, shooting +3 (74). Todd “Iron Man” LaCoste sits in solo 3rd place with a +4 (75), and Dennis “So Cool” Sokol is right behind at +5 (76). David White and Nathan Neal sit at +6 (77), while Sean Durkin is lurkin’ right behind at +8 (79), along with “The Commish” T. Ross Henry, Trevor “Irish” Spring, and Kirk Smith.

Congratulations to Brandon Immel on winning the Hill Country Amateur

Brandon Immel followed up a first round 1-under (71) with a low final round of 3-under (69), a 4-under (140) total, to claim this year’s Hill Country Amateur victory by 3 shots over Holden Wisener (143). Steve Paterson and Caleb Tucker both finished the weekend at 1-over (145) to tie for third place. Nikolas Lurken rounded out the top five with a 2-over (146) total. Steve Paterson also claimed 2 skins in the Championship division, worth a total of $230.

Juan Pozos claimed the Open Division title with a total net score of 7-over (151), with Jonathan Hesskew earning second place. Daniel Gachuche was solo third place at 9-over (153), with Philip Bowker earning fourth place and Purf Martinez earning fifth place, both at 11-over (155).

Thomas Flynn claimed the Senior Division with a total net score of 5-under (139). Kenny Ames was second with a net score of 7-over (151). Tom Chandler ended up at 8-over (152) to claim third place, and Randy Mavropoulis earned fourth place with a net score of 9-over (153). A two way tie for fifth place occurred between Blake Sudderth and Michael Garcia, both finishing with a net score of 11-over (155). Kenny Ames claimed 2 skins in the Senior Division, worth a total of $86.67.

2021 Firecracker registration is open

Registration for the 2021 Firecracker is open. For non-exempt players, June 14th and June 19th are the qualifying dates. This year’s Firecracker will take place July 2nd-4th at Lions Municipal.


The 2021 Firecracker Open is limited to players who are on the 2021 Exempt List, qualifying players from the June 14th and June 19th qualifiers , and 24 flighted players.

The following players are Exempt from the 2020 Firecracker Qualifying Process–Top 30 from the 2018 and 2019 Firecracker Open. 2019 Mid-Am Match Play Champ, 2019 Austin City Champ, 2019 Low Junior City Champ, 2019 Low Senior City Champ, 2019 Low Mid Am City Champ, 2019 Austin Women’s City Champ and runner up, 2019 Austin Senior City Champ and Runner Up, 2020 Hill Country Am Champ, 2020 Central Texas Am Champ Top 30 2019 City Championship, Firecracker Past Champions, 2019 Austin Rudy’s I-35 Cup Team:
