Barret Sandefur was 2-down through 9 holes of his semi-final match with Nathan Shilling, but shot 3-under on the back nine, advancing to the championship match 2&1. In the finals, Barrett continued to get hotter than the August temperature and shot a sizzling 4-under par on his front nine against Jonathan Alden, who earlier closed out Josh Luongo 1-up in their semi-final match. Steady golf for Barrett on the back nine against Alden resulted in a victorious 6&5 victory to claim the inaugural title.
This was a great week for match play golf – The Solheim Cup, the US Amateur, and the Austin Mid-Am Match Play all happening at the same time. Thank you to everyone involved at Grey Rock Golf Club and the City of Austin for establishing this event. Ask any of the competitors from this week – this was the best any of us have ever seen Grey Rock with respect to course conditions. The greens were pure, the fairways tight and the rough difficult but fair. A great match play venue, and a great match play champion in Barrett Sandefur!
The round of 16 is set for the inaugural Austin Mid-Amateur Match Play, after a Friday morning stroke play qualifying and the first round of matches.
The Bluebonnet Cup will be held on September 9-10, at Bluebonnet Hills Golf Club. Download the entry form by clicking the link below to register before the deadline of Sunday, September 3rd.
