Barrett Sandefur shot a 6-under 65 at Lions Municipal Golf Course in the first round of the 2017 Austin Men’s City Championship. One shot back at 5-under par is Ben Carter whose score stayed at the top of the leaderboard for most of the day, only to see Sandefur’s score post late. Gerry Diaz and Brian Noonan both sit at 4-under par, each shooting 67, followed by the trio of Jonathan Alden, Chris Hartenstein and Seger Howell – one shot back after rounds of 68. Rounding out the top 10 are Greg Smith, Hudson Ross and Daniel Martinez, at 2-under 69. Nine golfers sit at 1-under par as the tournament moves to Morris Williams Golf Course on Friday. Weather might be a factor as it was today – the early morning wave of players battled rain for almost two hours.
The leaderboard will be updated throughout the day, so check back for updates.
Colby Harwell, of San Antonio wins the State Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship over Scott Abbott 3&2. This year’s event was held at San Antonio Country Club, a founding member of the Texas Golf Association in 1906.
Lions Municipal, operated by the city since 1936, was Austin’s first public course. Its rich history includes the 1950 exhibition match involving Ben Hogan, Harvey Penick, Morris Williams Jr. and Ed Hopkins. Upon arriving at the current No. 16 tee, Hogan left a lasting footnote calling the difficult par-4 “the only hole I’ve ever seen without a fairway.”
