State Mid-Am Match Play results; Austin Men’s City up next…

Image 2017-07-23_180712Colby Harwell, of San Antonio wins the State Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship over Scott Abbott 3&2.  This year’s event was held at San Antonio Country Club, a founding member of the Texas Golf Association in 1906.

Three Austin area golfers advanced to the match play portion of this year’s event.  Barrett Sandefur advanced to the round of 8 with a 3&2 victory over Scott Smith, of Houston, and a 5&4 victory over Alan Baxter, of Windcrest.  Sandefur was defeated in the round of 8 by the eventual runner-up Scott Abbott, 1-up.  Nathan Shilling advanced to the round of 16 with a 1-up victory over Jamie Amoretti, but was defeated by Will Osborne of Ft. Worth, 4&2.  Cole Esau advanced to the round of 16 with a victory in 20 holes over David Richards, of Dallas.  Esau was defeated, also in 20 holes, by tournament runner-up Scott Abbott.

Lions Municipal announced as a 2017 Texas Golf Hall of Fame inductee

TexasGolfHallofFame2Lions Municipal, operated by the city since 1936, was Austin’s first public course. Its rich history includes the 1950 exhibition match involving Ben Hogan, Harvey Penick, Morris Williams Jr. and Ed Hopkins. Upon arriving at the current No. 16 tee, Hogan left a lasting footnote calling the difficult par-4 “the only hole I’ve ever seen without a fairway.”

The course impacted national history the next year when it became the first
municipal facility in the South to racially integrate. The USGA formally
recognized the desegregation as a milestone for the game.

Congratulations to the staff at Lions, the City of Austin and to the numerous supporters of amateur golf in our great city.

Other 2017 inductees include:  Kelli Kuehne, Steve Elkington, James E. “Buddy” Cook and Montford T. Johnson Jr.

Current 2017 point rankings and upcoming events…

The 2017 point rankings are current through the Firecracker, as of July 5th.  At roughly halfway through the 2017 season, there are still plenty of players within range for the top 8 Mid-Am and top 3 Senior spots on the 2017 Austin Rudy’s Cup team.  Grady Bruce, this year’s captain, will have 3 picks from outside these eleven automatic selections to round out our team.

The next point eligible tournament is the 2017 Texas Mid-Am Match Play, to be played at San Antonio Country Club.  This tournament is limited to the first 84 entries, and as of July 8, it looks as if there are 83 filled spots.  Deadline for entry is July 12 at 5:00 pm.

Just one month away is the 2017 Austin Men’s City Championship, set for August 3-6, with an entry deadline of July 31.  Later in August, the new Austin Mid-Am Match Play event is set for the 18th-20th at Grey Rock Golf Club.  The event will consist of an 18-hole stroke play qualifying round with the top 32 players moving on to round 1 of the match play bracket.  Entry deadline for this event is August 9th.
