Anthony Assini closes with a 69; wins Austin Senior Championship by one stroke

Men’s Senior DivisionLeaderboard

Anthony Assini started the final round of the 2023 Austin Senior Championship 2 strokes behind the leader, and 4 other players ahead of him, but managed a stress free 69 (-3) final round to come from behind and claim victory. One weary tee shot on hole 13 almost got him into some big trouble, but a bogey save kept victory in the cross hairs, as he parred the rest of the way in to win.

Assini had some pursuit late in the round, as Mike Harwood, who started the day with a one shot lead, nearly holed out for eagle on 17. A tap in birdie left him one shot back, needing a birdie on 18 to tie Assini. Nathan Shilling started the day one shot back of Harwood, and one ahead of Assini, and after just missing birdies on 15 and 16, tapped in for birdie on 17 – thus also needing birdie on 18 to tie. Harwood and Shilling both made par, and Assini rolled in a 3 footer on 18 for the victory.

Joe Ramos had the low round of the tournament with a final round 68 (-4) to move into 4th place, while Greg Smith holed out for eagle on 15 from just over 100 yards to bump him into 5th place. Todd Lacoste and Chris Hartenstein both finished Even for the tournament, good for T-6th place, and defending champion Grady Bruce finished 1-over to finish in 8th.

Men’s Super Senior DivisionLeaderboard

In the Super Senior division, Kevin Dahl was the only player who finished under par at -2, and claimed victory. Mike Bertram shot 69(-3) in the final round to finish in 2nd place at +1 total, while Tony Tirado and Jerry Attaway both finished at +3 to tie for 3rd. Robert Ducharme rounds out the top 5 finishing at +4.

Women’s Senior DivisionLeaderboard

In the Women’s Senior division, Michaelyn Farmer was crowned the champion, by finishing with a final round 74 (+2), and an 8-over total score of 152. In second place was Tracey Calloway (+27), third place was Elizabeth Martel (+56) and fourth place was Stacy Bass (+79).

Nick Schafer wins Austin City Championship by 3 strokes; Estelle Beck cruises to defend her title

Nick Schafer played steady in the final round of the 2023 Austin City Championship, holding off a charge by Jonathan Alden, and earned his second major victory of the year. Schafer finished with an 8-under par total of 207, after a final round 69 (-2). He adds another trophy for 2023, winning the Firecracker Open last month. Alden fired a final round 67 (-4) to finish 3 shots back.

Only four golfers shot under par in the final round, with Alden making the biggest leap up the leaderboard, moving up 7 spots to his runner up finish. Mierl and Schmitz, who both held the lead at one point in the tournament, could not mount a significant push to Schafer on the last day. Schafer has put his name on the map with victories at both the Firecracker Open and Men’s City Championship – a tremendous accomplishment. Congratulations Nick!

In the women’s division, Estelle Beck successfully defended her 2022 victory, with an impressive weekend of golf, finishing 14-under par, shooting 69-65-67 for a 201 total and a 22 stroke victory over her closest competitor, Briana LeMaire. Well played, Estelle.

The Austin City Championship also awards top finishers in the following categories: Low Junior, Low Senior, Low Mid Amateur. Congratulations to these finishers:

Low Junior: Kaden Frierson (+12)

Low Senior: Joe Ramos (+3)

Low Mid Amateur: Nick Schafer (-8)
