Howell maintains 2 stroke lead; Doggett 2 strokes behind

Seger Howell carried over his good play from round one to fire a second round 2-under 69 and maintain a two stroke lead in the 2018 Men’s City Championship.  Jake Doggett shot one stroke better than Howell in the second round to stay two shots back.  Howell stands at 7-under (135) and Doggett is at 5-under (137).

Brandon Rougeau sits alone in third place at 4-under (138), and there is a two way tie for fourth place between Josh Luongo and Jake Budde at 3-under (139) to round out the top 5.

Only 12 golfers were under par in today’s second round, with the biggest mover being Jake Budde who fired a bogey-free 7-under score of 64.  Budde is no stranger to playing Lions, as he won the 2017 Firecracker with three solid rounds in the 60s.

Howell leads Men’s City by 2 strokes after round 1

This year’s Men’s City Championship likely could not get here fast enough for Seger Howell.  After giving up 3 shots to par on the 71st and 72nd holes in last year’s event and losing to eventual winner Jonathan Alden by one stroke, Howell starts the 2018 tournament with a stellar 5-under 66 and a two stroke lead.  His two bogeys on the day were sandwiched between consecutive holes of 3 birdies on the front nine and 4 birdies on the back nine.

In a four-way tie in second place after day one, shooting 3-under 68 are Michael Cooper, Winn Smith and Tucker Tovar, along with the 2018 Rudy’s Cup captain Gene Black, who is making a very strong case for being a playing captain in this year’s event.

Jake Doggett sits at 2-under par, alone in sixth place, while the ageless Mike Allen rounds out the red numbers at 1-under par, alone in 7th place.  A nine-way tie for 8th place includes numerous familiar names around the Austin golf scene and prior Rudy’s Cup teams.  Defending Champion Jonathan Alden sits T-17 with a 1-over 73 after day one.

Play moves to Lions Municipal for round 2.  Follow the leaderboard for updated scores throughout the day.

Hendrix posts final round 61, wins 2018 Firecracker in a playoff over Alex Ellis

In what might likely be the last Firecracker Open at Lions Municipal Golf Course, it was sent out in stellar fashion with Jake Hendrix firing a back nine in only 28 strokes, en-route to a 10-under round of 61 and a playoff victory over Alex Ellis.  Both players finished the tournament with a score of 15-under (198).

Down 2 strokes with 3 holes to play, Hendrix birdied the difficult 16th.  A bogey for Ellis on the 17th, allowed both players to head to the final hole tied.  Both birdied the 18th to go to a playoff, where Hendrix prevailed.  Hendrix’s final round was bogey-free and included 8 birdies and an eagle.

Reid Davenport and Trevor Brown tied for third place at 11-under (202), with Dalton Hankamer and Michael Rome finishing tied for 5th place at 8-under (205).

Jeffrey Hoy Jr. wins the First Flight with an 8-over (221) total, and there was a tie for first place in the Second Flight between Myron Jordahl and Alan Bell.
